A Winning Mechanic Resume Example

Auto mechanics will always be in high demand. That’s good news. The challenge is that the best positions are rather competitive. If you want to land a top job at a dealership or auto repair center, you’ll need to impress the hiring manager with your skills and experience. To do this, you need a great resume that showcases how you can become a profitable and productive member of any team.

We’re happy to help with that. Take a close look at our quick resume writing tips and our mechanic resume sample.

Highlight Your Sales and Customer Service Skills

You already know that you need more than fix-it skills. The most in-demand mechanics can upsell parts and services to customers. They can also deal effectively with upset or frustrated clients. Show that you have those qualities too!

To do that, attempt to answer some of the following questions in your resume:

  • What is your average upsell percentage?
  • How are your mystery shop or customer service ratings?
  • Have you convinced many customers to sign up for ongoing maintenance contracts or warranties?
  • Do customers request you specifically?
  • How do you deal with customer complaints?

Create a Master List of Your Technical Skills

Even if you have significant experience, consider using a functional resume format. Why? Well, doing so will allow you to create a master list of your technical skills at the top of your resume.

The shop manager will appreciate knowing exactly what you are capable of the moment they begin reviewing your resume. This section might look something like this:

  • Toyota drivetrain specialist
  • Foreign and domestic vehicle diagnostics
  • High-performance auto experience
  • Experience in high volume dealerships
  • Suspension, brake, and tire specialist
  • Automotive electrical systems diagnostics and repair
  • Diesel, electrical, and gas engine repair

Detail Each Certification

While there is always work for shade-tree mechanics, the best paying work is always going to be at reputable dealerships and repair shops. To work at these places, and ensure your career continues an upward trajectory, you’ll need education and certifications.

Not only are these a selling point for you, these certificates and diplomas can also help your future employer sell your services to their customers. Here are some of the most common automotive degrees and certifications that you may want to highlight in your resume:

  • AAS or Certificate of completion in automotive technology
  • AAS or Certificate of completion in diesel mechanics
  • ASE Certification
  • GM Certification
  • Under car specialist
  • Steering and suspension specialist
  • Electrical Engine Systems specialist
  • Brake technician
  • HVAC
  • Alternate fuels
  • Damage assessment and estimating

Show a Clear Career Progression

As you write your job history, keep in mind that each position should show that you took on greater responsibilities, worked on more complex problems, and delved deeper into your choice of specialty. Make note if you were responsible for doing diagnostic work, or had management responsibilities. This shows that you are career-driven and motivated — other key qualities employers look for.

Beat The ATS

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System — a tool designed to weed out irrelevant resumes out of the application pool before they get seen by a human being. ATS works by scanning each resume for certain keywords. If those keywords don’t exist, the assumption is made that the applicant isn’t qualified.

To beat the system, you must make sure that you have the right keywords. The best way to do that is to use the job listing. The listing will include the types of experience you need, any educational requirements, tools used, etc. Copy those straight in your resume.
